3D/4D Ultrasound: Advanced Fetal Anatomy & Movement Visualization
3D/4D ultrasound technology has currently reached a stage where it can easily be used in daily routine examinations. In contrast to conventional 2D ultrasound, which only presents the foetus in a 2D perspective, the different 3D modes provide us with images that can never be achieved with 2D ultrasound and give the physician the opportunity to identify normal and abnormal foetal anatomy in the most appropriate mode. 4D ultrasound with fast volume acquisition not only offers the detection of normal and abnormal foetal movements, but, using STIC-Colour, also the observation and examination of the foetal heart in motion.

What Are the Technical Features of 3D Ultrasound Scans?
- Three-Dimensional Imaging: This feature allows for a comprehensive view of the fetus, capturing intricate details of its anatomy.
- Static 3D Images: Unlike 4D ultrasound, 3D ultrasound provides still images rather than live motion.
- High-Frequency Sound Waves: The use of advanced sound wave technology improves image resolution, resulting in clearer and more detailed images.

When Is the Best Time to Schedule a 3D or 4D Ultrasound Scan During Pregnancy?
What Are the Recommended Gestational Weeks for Optimal Imaging?
- 18-22 Weeks: Ideal for determining the baby's gender and observing early development.
- 26-30 Weeks: Optimal for capturing detailed facial features and movements.
- 31-34 Weeks: Useful for final assessments before delivery, although space may be limited as the baby grows.
How Should Expectant Mothers Prepare for Their Ultrasound Appointment?
- Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of water before the appointment can help improve image clarity.
- Wear Comfortable Clothing: Loose-fitting clothes make it easier to access the abdomen during the scan.
- Follow Specific Instructions: Healthcare providers may offer additional guidelines to ensure the best imaging experience.

Is 3D and 4D Ultrasound Safe for Mother and Fetus?
Safety Guidelines for 3D/4D Prenatal Ultrasound
During 3D/4D acquisition, a fetusin uterois exposed by ultrasound beam for only a few seconds, and it is as short as real-time B-mode scanning. Therefore, simple 3D imaging is as safe as a simple B-mode scan. The 4D ultrasound is also as safe as a simple B-mode scan, but the ultrasound exposure should be shorter than 30 min. The thermal index (TI) and mechanical index (MI) should both be lower than 1.0, and the ultrasound study is regulated by the Doppler ultrasound if it is combined with simple 3D or 4D ultrasound.
